Event Details

Have you ever been deceived? In an interview for a new recruit? By a business partner or client?  By a colleague? By a news source?  The Truth Telling master class with Cliff Lansley and Dr Dawn Archer will interest all who are concerned about  the validity of what we hear read and see. 

Cliff Lansley is the Mangaging Director of Paul Ekman International, which has been established to make emotional skills and deception detection programmes accessible across the world. Cliff has presented programmes to professionals working across many sectors including police, interrogators, negotiators, recruitment staff, investment advisors, venture capitalists, healthcare professionals, psychologists, trainers/coaches and sales staff.

 Dr Dawn Archer is Reader in Corpus Linguistics at the University of Central Lancashire, where her internationally-rated research includes using computer aided linguistic analysis to identify implicit/“hidden” messages.

Truth Telling FlyerThe #truthtelling masterclass, which is offered in conjunction with the Journalism Leaders Programme at UCLAN, will run from 9am to 3pm on Thursday, October 20st in Preston. If you’re planning to attend, make the most of your trip to the capital of Lancashire by staying on for the autumn meeting of the Digital Editors Network (with presentations by Guardian Media Group’s Community Strategist Sarah Hartley, and others) followed by a networking reception and the 14th Journalism Leaders Forum, which runs from 6-7pm. The Forum, co-sponsored by the Society of Editors, will consider, “Press Regulation: Is there a Third Way?". More details on the DEN blog.

Transport? Getting to and around Preston is easy with direct train links from Manchester (40 minutes), Liverpool (58 min) Manchester Airport (60min), London (2h14), Glasgow (2h20). The campus is a 10 minute walk, or 5 minute taxi ride from the station.

Accommodation? There is a range of accommodation options available in Preston, including the very conveniently located  Legacy Preston International and the new Premier Inn Central, which both get very good reviews. 

What to bring? Participants may wish to bring their own laptops; wireless broadband and power outlets will be available.
